My name is Don White and I am an aspiring International Education Professional.
Professionally I aspire to work in International Education/Student Affairs/Academic Advising helping students navigate the insanity that is higher learning. At the same time I continually develop for WordPress with the idea as a CMS for higher ed in mind with social media strategies.
In regards to my academic pursuits I am currently a Master’s Candidate at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the Asian Studies Department. My current research is examining the Tabletop RPG subculture and Otaku in Japan.
I grew up in Delaware, OH. I completed my undergraduate degree in International Studies – Asia at Ohio University in 2005.
While at OU, I participated in a number of activities. During my 3rd year I studied abroad at Chubu University in Kasugai, Japan for two quarters. Chubu is what you’d call a sister-school where OU students go there and Chubu students went to OU. I volunteered with the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE) helping Japanese exchange students from Chubu University, and worked for a year as web manager for the OU International Student and Faculty Services office maintaining their website and serving as layout editor for their newsletter. I also served on the executive committee for both Japanese Connection and the OU Gaming Academy while a student.
After graduating I went to live in Shizukuishi, Iwate, Japan to work as an English teacher. I worked in ten elementary and one junior high school for two years. It is definitely a very valuable experience in my life.
In 2007 I came to Hawaii to work on my Master’s degree and during which I began working at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Study Abroad Center assisting students and designing the current website. It was during this time period that I realized my dream career and have been working to improve my skills in higher education ever since.
In spring of 2011, I participated in the local HI/Pacific NAFSA Conference by giving a presentation on uses of the internet and social media in higher education.Not long after the conference I joined the Region XII HI/Pacific District Team as Web Administrator.
